29 Young Immigrants Approved for Work Permits Under Deferred ...

WASHINGTON ? In the past month, the Obama administration has approved 29 young illegal immigrants for work permits, but is this enough to make a significant difference in their lives?

While 29 immigrants have escaped deportation, a whopping 82,000 applied and have not been granted deferred action. ?Yet, authorities assure that more help will be offered soon.

Statistics show that about 1.2 million young illegal immigrants may qualify for immediate two-year work permits and protection from deportation. When compared to that number, it is sad to see that only 82,361 immigrants applied in the first month since the Obama administration began applications on Aug. 15.

Officials said it will take about four to six months before applicants get an answer, but encourage all who qualify to apply and just have a little patience.

?By approving some cases quickly, it alleviates some of the fears of other applicants,? said Mark Silverman of the San Francisco-based Immigrant Legal Resource Center.

Immigrants who wish to apply for deportation relief must meet the following qualifications:

• They must have come to the United States before they were 16 years old
• Must currently be under 30 years of age
• Must have lived in the country continuously since 2007
• Cannot have a criminal record
• Must have graduated high school or are currently in school or the military.

The cost to apply for the work permit is $465. While it provides relief from deportation, the work permits do not offer the benefits of legal immigration or citizenship and are only good for two years.
