Google's 'continuous gesture' patent application runs circles around copy and paste

You know the drill, you're browsing an article about volcanos on your phone and want to know more about Eyjafjallajokull. You've got two options, commit that bad-boy to memory, or fiddle with copy and paste. Well, Google not only feels your pain, but has some medicine for it too -- if a patent filing is anything to go by. The application describes a two-part continuous gesture for easier searching on touchscreens. Imagine drawing a "g" with your finger, then circling the text or image you want to search in one motion, and you'll get the basic drift. It's also indicated that different letters could be drawn to search different sites, "w" for Wikipedia, "y" for Yahoo and so on. The patent also includes methods to search for multiple words from the same text, or even words and images. Certainly it's not too much of a stretch to imagine this becoming a standard part of Android, but, as always, we don't know for sure. That said, chances are we'll still be typing out our Icelandic friend's name by the time we do find out.

Jessica Ahlquist, Atheist Student In Prayer Banner Fight, Gets $40,000 Scholarship Fund

CRANSTON, R.I. -- A national association that says there's no proof for the existence of God is managing a scholarship fund set up for a teenage atheist at the center of a dispute over a prayer banner at a Rhode Island school.

The American Humanist Association says 16-year-old Jessica Ahlquist was targeted with online threats after she challenged the constitutionality of the display at Cranston High School West. It says she stood up against her critics "with class and style."

A federal judge last month ordered the banner removed. A school committee on Thursday decided not to appeal.

Blogger Hemant Mehta started a campaign at the Friendly Atheist website to raise money for Ahlquist.

The Friendly Atheist says the fund has brought in more than $40,000. The fundraiser runs through the end of February.

Sirens scream in quake drill across Indian capital (AP)

NEW DELHI ? Ambulance sirens are screaming across New Delhi as the Indian capital holds a major disaster drill amid fears that a major earthquake could topple many buildings and homes.

Metro trains ground to a halt for more than a half-hour Wednesday while firefighters staged mock rescues and school children dived under desks for cover.

Dogs sniffed out people posing as survivors, and medics tended to fake wounds.

It was the biggest-ever earthquake drill across the city of 16.7 million people. Much of New Delhi is vulnerable to quake damage because of poorly constructed buildings, loosely hanging electrical wires and narrow alleys.

The city says a quake could cause moderate or significant damage to nine out of 10 buildings.

Grammy Awards hit high note with big audience (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? The Nielsen Co. says the Grammy Awards telecast made sweet music in the ratings, delivering its largest audience since 1984.

According to preliminary figures released Monday, more than 39 million viewers flocked to the CBS broadcast, making it the second most-watched Grammys in history. That exceeds last year's Oscars broadcast, which was seen by 37.6 million viewers.

Sunday's Grammys broadcast was notable not only for the numerous trophies dispensed to recording artists but also for its role in serving as a memorial to Whitney Houston, a six-time winner.

The superstar singer died unexpectedly Saturday, just hours before she was supposed to appear at a pre-Grammy gala. She was 48.

Choosing Online Payroll Service Provider for Small Businesses

There is often a debate that online payroll services can be a good option for small businesses. While small businesses are always on a look out for a way to reduce costs and save time, taking a new service may harm their reputation among employees. Therefore, this article provides comparison between online payroll firms with traditional payroll companies to help them make a wise decision.

There are top seven reasons to choose online payroll service for small businesses. These are:

  1. Working Hours: The payroll firm is available only during office working timings. However, web payroll firms are available to provide support and assistance for 24X7.
  2. Payroll Records: Both the payroll service providers have systematic way of storing the payroll information. However, the difference is in their speed to provide you the desired payroll details. The payroll company takes time to find out records whereas online payroll company provides a secured access to view the entire data anytime and from anywhere.
  3. Access to Payroll: With advancement in web payroll system, it is now possible to view payroll details and run payroll through mobile. There is only a need to install the software application to perform your tasks by bringing mobility to your lives. Such type of options is not available with payroll companies.
  4. Additional Services: Whether a company is small or big, there is often a craze to grab additional services. Fortunately, online payroll service providers understand this requirement and provide a wide range of additional services to the small businesses.
  5. Different Software Integration: Reducing the work by taking the help of software is only possible by taking online payroll services. The different software integration tools help a business to reduce time in re-entering the same details for two business activities. For instance, accounting software integration or time clock integration software are good options.
  6. Stay Compliant with Payroll Tax Rules: The online company helps you to stay compliant with latest Federal, State and Local payroll taxes. They take charge of calculating the right payroll amount and making payments for payroll taxes on time as per the latest tax rules.
  7. Accountability: The payroll companies do not provide you any guarantee for accuracy and timeliness for their solutions. However, web payroll firms are truly accountable for their services. They guarantee accuracy in payroll calculations and also help you in dealing with IRS notices.

The final decision is still in your hands. You can compare the cost, features and services before hiring their services for your small businesses.

Mountain Maladies: Genetic Screening Susses Out Susceptibility to Altitude Sickness

PEAK CONDITION: Soldiers fighting in mountainous regions often succumb to altitude sickness. So do cows in the Rockies, thousands of which die every summer. Now, scientists are working on genetic tests for altitude sickness susceptibility. Image: Chris 73, Wikimedia Commons

On his 27th birthday, David Hillebrandt and his wife Sally began to climb Mount Kenya, the second-highest mountain in Africa after Kilimanjaro. Instead of gearing up and heading straight for the mountain's tallest peak?which reaches 5,199 meters?the couple started their journey more leisurely, trekking through scenic ridges and valleys around the mountain at an altitude of about 3,000 meters.

David, who today serves as a medical advisor to the British Mountaineering Council, already had considerable climbing experience at the time: he had scaled a 5,790-meter peak in Pakistan and 3,960-meter peaks in the European Alps. Sally, in contrast, had never done any serious climbing and did not consider herself a mountaineer.

But Sally wasn't the one who needed to stop and turn around.

"I am meant to be this tough, rugged mountaineer," David says, "and I celebrated my birthday by throwing up all over the place." Plagued by a throbbing headache and relentless nausea, David retreated to lower ground. He knew from previous climbs that he was prone to altitude sickness, but he thought circling the mountain at 3,000 meters would be a good way to acclimatize. This time it didn't do the trick. Even though she was a far less experienced climber, Sally adjusted to the altitude much faster.

It wasn't experience that made the difference?it was genetics. Scientists have known for awhile that some people are inherently more susceptible to altitude sickness than others?and that this susceptibility is heritable?but only now are they on the trail of the culprit genes. Preliminary studies suggest that a group of six genes predicts who will get altitude sickness with greater than 90 percent accuracy. Such a precise genetic test would greatly benefit the military, which currently has no way of predicting which soldiers will fall ill when flown to high altitudes and would rather not waste money on expensive acclimatization drugs. In a parallel research effort, scientists have been searching for the genes that determine which cows develop altitude sickness, also known as brisket disease, when they graze in the Rocky Mountains. Because tens of thousands of cows die in the western U.S. from brisket disease annually, ranchers would like nothing more than to strip the responsible genes from the breeding population.

Written in blood
The pursuit of a genetic test for altitude sickness began in earnest a few years ago in Robert Roach's laboratory at the University of Colorado. In 2010, 28 people in Roach's lab ascended to an altitude of 4,875 meters without ever leaving the ground. Roach placed his volunteers in a large metal box called a hypobaric chamber and gradually sucked out air with a vacuum pump, reducing atmospheric pressure to mimic a high altitude, low-oxygen environment. Roach purposefully recruited a mixture of people who were susceptible to altitude sickness and people who had never had problems in high climes. As expected, about half of the 28 volunteers felt sick in the chamber, whereas the others felt fine.

Roach took samples of his volunteers' blood, isolated their DNA and programmed a computer to search for genetic differences between the people who got sick and those who didn't mind hanging out in thin air. The program identified six genes that are expressed at unusually high or low levels in people who felt sick; some of the genes are linked to oxygen transport. Looking at the expression levels of those six genes alone was enough to distinguish people who became ill from those who did not with about 95 percent accuracy.

The following year, Roach collaborated with Benjamin Levine of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center to try the rudimentary genetic test on a larger group of volunteers. This time, instead of bringing the mountain to his lab, Roach decided to move his lab to the mountain.

In groups of about 15, Roach and Levine took 140 fit men and women from Dallas to Mount Baldy in Breckenridge, Colo., which is around 4,000 meters above sea level. During their weekend mountain getaway, the volunteers in each group?all of whom had passed the Army Physical Fitness Test?ran 3.2 kilometers, did push-ups and sit-ups, and hiked a trail as fast as they could. A few days earlier, everyone in the group had performed the same exercises at sea level. Altitude made all the difference. "We had some serious athletes in our group, a lot of triathlon people," says Tom Tielleman, 24, a former Eagle Scout. "Everyone did worse on the mountain." Some people did worse than others.

Currently, Roach and Levine are analyzing DNA from the Breckenridge study, searching for the same six genes that Roach identified in the hypobaric chamber study as well as looking for new genetic patterns that discriminate between people whose performance decreased slightly on the mountain and those whose performance worsened dramatically. If they find a strong signature, Roach predicts that they will develop a working genetic test for altitude sickness within a year. The Pentagon, which funds some of Roach's research, wants an easy way to identify soldiers who succumb to altitude sickness when fighting in mountainous regions.

In many cases, the symptoms of altitude sickness are mild and dissipate after a few days. But for some people altitude sickness is not just a minor inconvenience?the headaches, nausea and vomiting are debilitating, making it difficult to stand up or think clearly, let alone fight a war. Some people cough up blood and retain fluid in their lungs as the pressure inside capillaries increases, forcing out water. The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine estimates that above 3,000 meters between 25 and 35 percent of soldiers yield to altitude sickness; above 4,000 meters, between 80 and 90 percent of soldiers fall ill. Although there are effective drugs like Diamox (acetazolamide) to prevent and treat altitude sickness, buying drugs in mass quantities for an unknown number of soldiers is expensive and wasteful, and some drugs have unwanted side effects such as blurred vision and excess blood acidity. A genetic test would not help treat altitude sickness, but it would help military leaders strategize, giving the soldiers most likely to get sick more time to acclimatize and thereby reducing the number of medical evacuations.

Bloated bovines
Altitude sickness is also the scourge of entirely different population of mountain-dwellers: cows. By the time a rancher spots one lumbering up and down the mountain, its swollen chest sloshing between its front legs, there is not much he can do except move the animal to a lower altitude and hope it lives. Every summer in the U.S. West?when ranchers take cattle to graze on grassy mountain slopes?tens of thousands of cows die because they cannot adapt to the thin, oxygen-poor air. For the past two years, scientists collaborating with a new research facility at New Mexico State University (N.M.S.U.) in Las Cruces have been searching for the genes that determine which cows develop high altitude sickness, aka brisket disease. Once they find the genes, the idea is to breed them out of the bovine population.

From May to November each year, ranchers in many parts of the western U.S. take their cattle into the mountains where there is more rainfall and more nutritious grass than at lower altitudes?lower oxygen levels notwithstanding. In the Rockies, summer pastures range from 1,500 to 3,650 meters; an altitude greater than 1,500 meters is enough to induce brisket disease. In some parts of Montana and Colorado, cattle graze at altitudes upward of 4,000 meters, says Manny Encinias, director of N.M.S.U.'s Top of the Valle research facility in Valles Caldera National Preserve.

Whereas some cows take the swift transition to high altitudes in stride, others swell up and die. Not all breeds are equally susceptible, nor are all individuals from a single breed?just as human susceptibility to acute mountain sickness varies. Healthy cows respond to low-oxygen environments in a characteristic way: their hearts beat faster to deliver enough oxygenated blood to the body and brain, and blood vessels in the lung constrict to shunt blood to the organ's oxygen-rich areas. Cows that develop brisket disease respond similarly, but their body's compensation is too aggressive for their own good. Blood pressure increases so much that plasma seeps out of the blood vessels into tissues surrounding the heart and lungs, bloating the cows' chests. And blood vessels in the lung constrict so much that the blood backs up into the heart, which eventually gives out. The cows collapse and die from heart failure.

At Top of the Valle, which is nearly 2,600 meters above sea level, researchers are working to pinpoint the exact genes responsible for the physiological differences between a cow that keels over in the mountains and one that remains as lively as Julie Andrews in the Alps.

Ranchers in New Mexico, Texas, Colorado and Utah send their cows to N.M.S.U., where Tim Holt of Colorado State University in Fort Collins slides a catheter through their jugular veins toward their hearts and measures arterial pressure?an indicator of the cow's susceptibility to brisket disease. If tests suggest the cow won't fare well in the mountains, a rancher may avoid a potential loss by selling the cow to a lower-altitude ranch. "It's almost a given that ranchers will lose between 5 and 30 percent of their herd if they send cattle to high country?that's of great economic significance," Holt says. N.M.S.U. says the beef industry loses $60 million annually to high altitude disease. Some ranchers have considered giving cattle drugs designed to treat mountain sickness in people, like acetazolamide, but the FDA has not approved the use of such drugs in animals meant for human consumption.

Even if N.M.S.U. tested all of the nearly one million cows grazing in the Rockies for pulmonary hypertension?high blood pressure in the lungs?it wouldn't solve the brisket problem. When ranchers purchase bull semen for artificial insemination?the most common breeding practice in the Rockies?there is no way to know if the semen contains the undesirable genes responsible for brisket. Furthermore, ranchers risk reintroducing those genes into a population they have already worked to make mountain-friendly through generations of artificial selection. By identifying the responsible genes, scientists give ranchers a way to screen bulls for those genes and eliminate the problem of genetic recontamination.

"If you raise a bull at sea level, you can't figure out his genetic predisposition to high altitude sickness without taking him above 5,000 feet. Our ultimate goal is to take a DNA sample and generate a value: either a concrete 'Yes or No' or a numerical value of genetic merit," explains Jonathan Beever of the University of Illinois at Urbana?Champaign. Beever receives blood samples from N.M.S.U., the DNA in which he analyzes.

"There's always been theories about which breeds and animals are more susceptible," Encinias says. "Now we are trying to objectively quantify it."

Earth's next supercontinent dubbed Amasia, when to expect it

Supercontinents are giant landmasses made up of more than one continental core. The best-known supercontinent, Pangaea, was once the world's only continent ? it was on it that the dinosaurs arose ? and was the progenitor of today's continents.

The Earth has been covered by giant combinations of continents, called supercontinents, many times in its past, and it will be again one day in the distant future. The next predicted supercontinent, dubbed Amasia, may form when the Americas and Asia both drift northward to merge, closing off the Arctic Ocean, researchers suggest.

Supercontinents are giant landmasses made up of more than one continental core. The best-known supercontinent, Pangaea, was once?the world's only continent?? it was on it that the dinosaurs arose ? and was the progenitor of today's continents.

Conventional models of how supercontinents evolve suggest they form on top of the previous supercontinent, known as introversion, or on the opposite side of the world from that supercontinent, known as extroversion. Under these models Amasia would therefore either form where Pangaea once was, with the Americas meeting with Asia to close off the Atlantic Ocean, or form on the other side of the planet from where Pangaea was, with the Americas merging with Asia to close off the Pacific Ocean.

Now, geologists suggest that Amasia might emerge sideways from?where Pangaea once existed, in what is now the Arctic, a process known as orthoversion. Moreover, this new model seems consistent with models of how past supercontinents formed, said researcher Ross Mitchell, a geologist at Yale University.

Which way did it form?

The introversion model, on the one hand, assumes that the oceanic plate between continents that formed when a supercontinent pulled apart has stopped spreading. As such, there is nothing to keep the continents from drifting back together and forming another supercontinent. The extroversion model, on the other hand, proposes that the?oceanic plate?that formed when a supercontinent pulled apart would keep spreading. The continents then drift away from it, meeting up on the other side of the planet to merge.

The new orthoversion model from Mitchell and his colleagues bases its motion of continents on where the edges of past supercontinents were. For instance, when Pangaea broke up, its rim dove or subducted downward into the earth. This subduction zone, which encircles the Pacific Ocean, is known as?the Ring of Fire, and is where many of the largest earthquakes and volcanic eruptions now take place.

The orthoversion model proposes that the subduction zone surrounding a one-time supercontinent drives where its former components end up going. This suggests that modern continents will slide either north or south around the Ring of Fire. Since the Caribbean Sea between North and South America and the Arctic Ocean between the Americas and Asia appear transient in nature, the researchers suggest the Americas and Asia will go north instead of south, meeting at the Arctic to form Amasia.

To see which model of the supercontinent cycle might be right, the researchers tried to see which best matched data on how past supercontinents formed. These included Pangaea, as well as Rodinia, which existed between 750 million and 1.1 billion years ago, and Nuna, which existed between 1.5 billion to 1.8 billion years ago.

Rock records

To see how the components of supercontinents moved, scientists analyzed the impact that Earth's magnetic field has on ancient rocks. Magnetic minerals in molten rock can act like compasses,?aligning with the planet's magnetic field lines, an orientation that gets frozen in place once the rock solidifies. Since these lines generally run north-south, looking at the way these minerals point can shed light on how the landmasses they are a part of might have drifted in space over time.

The researchers found that Pangaea apparently formed at nearly a 90-degree angle from the direction along which?Rodinia fragmented?? that is, Pangaea formed neither where Rodinia once was nor on the opposite side of the planet, but somewhere nearly exactly between those spots. Rodinia seemingly emerged in a similar manner from Nuna. Both findings support orthoversion as the explanation for how supercontinents form and fragment.

"Now that we have a clear picture of what the supercontinent cycle actually looks like, we can begin to answer the questions of why the supercontinent cycle operates as it does," Mitchell told OurAmazingPlanet. "Why a supercontinent breaks apart remains an unanswered question."

When to expect Amasia

These findings could also help scientists better understand the?history of life on this planet, by figuring out where landmasses were and how organisms might have dispersed.

"Continents with similar fossil records likely share an evolutionary ancestry, but actually establishing a land bridge by juxtaposing those continents is finding the smoking gun," Mitchell said.

As to when Amasia might form, that is "difficult to answer, because the supercontinent cycle is not as regular as the seasonal cycle, for example," Mitchell said. "But we can get a clue from Earth's history ? the cycle is speeding up, such that the recurrence interval between successive supercontinents has become less and less. Knowing that Pangea formed 300 million years ago, we can predict a range of Amasia ages from 50 to 200 million years from now."

The scientists detailed their findings in the Feb. 9 issue of the journal Nature.

Adobe FormsCentral

Adobe's FormsCentral provides form-building capabilities found in other business productivity solutions such as Microsoft Access? and Homestead.

What FormsCentral gives you over the others is good, quick, and easy-to-use Business Intelligence capability integrated with form design. The BI components allow businesses to analyze data gathered from submitted forms, which can be embedded in websites, Facebook pages, Twitter, or in email campaigns. In addition, FormsCentral is a good way to create some neat forms for interacting with visitors and customers to your site?without having to beg your developer buddies for help (or hire one!).

Pricing and Setup

A free version of FormsCentral lets you try out the service but comes with too many restrictions to be worthwhile. You can create just one form and collect up to 50 responses. Worse, you don't get any of the BI functionality, which, to me, is the real value proposition of FormsCentral.

There's a $14.99 per month account for creating up to five forms, receiving up to 500 responses per form. You also get advanced capabilities like adding attachments, BI analysis, and other features like redirecting users to a URL after submitting a form and submission notification. The highest-tiered subscription is billed at $199 per year. This version gives unlimited form creation, 5,000 responses per form, and all the features already mentioned. Paid subscribers can upload attachments of up to 20MB per form. Free users can upload attachments up to 100KB.

To sign up, users have to create an Adobe.com account. You can test out a free trial account but, again, it does not give you all the features?which is unfortunate because I think?potential subscribers?should be able to test the full logics and business intelligence embedded in the solution on a temporary basis.

Once you log in to FormsCentral, a dashboard screen opens up and guides you through setting up a new form from scratch, or lets you choose from among the many templates included.

There are templates to fulfill a variety of purposes: registering for an event, for market research surveying, grant applications, and more. Adobe has templates listed in a number of categories, such as HR, Education, and Sales.

Respondents who fill out the forms can access them on mobile devices, as FormsCentral supports iOS 4.2.1 devices and Android 2.2 devices or later.

The FormsCentral Experience

The interface has the same elegant design found in many of the solutions that make up the Acrobat.com ecosystem. It's sharp, easy-on-the-eyes, user-friendly, and highly-navigable.

Anyone used to working in a productivity suite should have little problem creating and customizing forms. The forms are quite customizable as far as changing backgrounds, colors, fonts, and adding images.?I did notice you?can't edit images embedded into forms. The image has to be edited in an external editor and then uploaded and added to the form?kind of a time-waster. Even simple edits like cropping and so on would be extremely helpful, and, if anyone should be able to include that functionality, it's
Adobe.

Form designers can also assign user roles to forms, which is good for team collaboration. User roles include Author, Co-Author, Contributor, and Reader.

A large part of form customizing is adding items. These items can include checklists, radio buttons, email, and data fields. Users can apply logic to those fields: for example, you can setup a rule whereby if someone answers "No" to one question on the form, another entire section can become visible or hidden.

Only simple "Yes" or "No" conditional statements can be applied, but that is still good enough to let users create some very professional forms.

There are other "behavioral" options you can add to forms. If you have a form you no longer want users to fill out, you can add a closed message that users will see upon accessing the form. Whenever someone clicks to submit a form you can setup a custom confirmation message or just use the canned one setup in FormsCentral. Users can also be redirected to a URL upon form submission.

Adobe makes it simple to distribute forms and provides several ways. You can make a form available as a dedicated link from the FormsCentral website or as an embeddable widget.

The process of creating the form was smooth, and any rules and fields I created, tested without any problems. However what impressed me the most was the BI integration and the potential for quick and easy integration of data collected from forms into existing line-of-business applications like CRM and financial systems.

After users have submitted forms, you can view the results of that submitted data within the FormsCentral dashboard. User responses are displayed in a tabular format. FormsCentral users can work with the table in much of same way as with a spreadsheet, adding data and formulas as needed. The data are also exportable as a PDF, CSV, or Excel files.

FormsCentral also gives graphical representation of data in the form of colorful charts. Charts offer a quick glance at valuable information such as the percentage of users who answered a question in a particular way. Business users are given relatively affordable and quite easy way to collect important data for further analysis and for importing it into
existing systems.

Big Value for Data Analysis

Data is perhaps the most valuable resource in business. With FormsCentral, users are given access to this precious resource with a user-interaction tool that's both affordable and easy to use. For businesses that rely on analysis of their current and potential client base, Adobe FormsCentral could prove to have real ROI. It's a four star Editors' Choice for its simple form design capabilities and especially for the data analysis it could enable for small businesses.

Making Your Old Furniture Modern | DIY Home Improvement Blog

Old Furniture
After spending sometime looking through Daybreak homes for sale, you have the keys. Moving into a new home is an exciting time. However, many new homeowners feel overwhelmed when they move into a new home with all of their old things. Here are a few ideas to make that old furniture fit your new place.

  • VisionAnytime you undertake a project, you should do it with a clear vision in mind. Plan out the style, colors, furniture placement, and feel of the room. Look online or through magazines for pictures and ideas of how you want it to look. You could also check out model homes or many cities offer Parade of Homes throughout the year. There are also great ideas and resources on blogs for decorating within a budget.
  • PaintHead to your local paint retailer and get out the paint brush. A fresh paint of coat gives a new, fresh look to your old furniture. Handpainted furniture allows you to customize and match your furniture to your new home and also gives it a unique look. If you don?t like the look of it or want to change the color later on, it?s a pretty simple fix.
  • AccentsThings as little and simple as an accent can make a big difference with your old furniture. Buy a new lampshade, new pillows for the sofa, new picture frames or artwork for the walls. Also, plants can be a simple addition that really add to a room. You can use these new accents to draw attention to create a focal point for the room.

When decorating your new Daybreak homes, remember to have patience and that you don?t need to have it decorated all at once! Take time and have fun focusing on one room at a time. Good home decor is decor that reflects you. Make it your own and have some fun with it!

Lake Vostok is (Almost) Breached After 20 Million Years

Satellite composite showing location of Vostok within the Antarctic continent (NASA)

Two and a half miles beneath the surface of Antarctica?s central Eastern ice sheet is a body of water 160 miles by 30 miles across known as Lake Vostok, after the Vostok research station above it, built by the former Soviet Union in 1957 and now operated by Russia.

Even by Antarctic standards it?s a brutal place, with the dubious honor of holding the record for the lowest measured temperature anywhere on the planet, a mind-if-not-body numbing -129 F or -89 C. Performing any kind of mechanical or scientific work in this environment is an immense challenge.

For the past 14 years a hole has been gradually drilled down from this location into the ancient layers of ice. Each short summer season allowing for a little more progress. Hints that there could be a vast sub-surface body of water arose in the 1950?s and 60?s. Ground penetrating radar later confirmed these suggestions ? and Lake Vostok, with 1,300 cubic miles liquid water, was revealed some 2.5 miles below the ice (although only 500 meters below planetary sea-level).

Radar image of Lake Vostok (Satellite imagery, NASA)

It quickly became clear that this was an environment sealed away from Earth?s surface, and although the water in the lake may itself be slowly changed out by the deep ice-dynamics of Antarctica, this process could take well over 10,000 years. It is also possible that hydrostatic sealing has kept the lake truly isolated for millions of years.

So what?s happening in Lake Vostok? We don?t know. Devoid of light but likely bursting with supersaturated oxygen and other gases, Vostok has long been speculated to be a potential habitat for unique ecosystems of extremophilic microbial life (and who knows what else). Despite the clear risks of contaminating what may be a pristine and fragile environment, Russian scientists have now, after more than a decade, drilled to the top of the lake (see this BBC news item for example, and this report in Nature). Water samples are now going to be extracted by lowering the pressure from the drill rig (and getting, we hope, all the nasty kerosene lubricant and anti-freeze out of the system), and then given full biological and chemical analysis.

It?s tremendously exciting just as it?s also tremendously worrying that we will have messed up yet another irreplaceable ecosystem. Forward contamination of planets, as I wrote about in my last post, can happen right here under our (frozen) noses. However, if we?re lucky then what we?ll learn about the lost world of Lake Vostok may provide scientific impetus to get ourselves to one of the extraordinary sub-surface oceans that exist elsewhere in our solar system, from the Jovian moons Europa and Ganymede, to the geyser-spouting mysteries of distant Enceladus. It?s possible that what?s happening at Vostok Station today is the beginning of our next chapter in the search for life in the universe.

And, an added postscript, an excellent diagram of the vertical/horizontal structure of the lake and its surroundings.

Consumer Bureau: Will Take Immediate Steps ... - Payday Loans UK

Dow Jones

By Maya Jackson Randall, Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The federal government will be giving payday loans ?
much more attention,? Richard Cordray, head of the new Consumer Financial
Protection Bureau, said Thursday during the agency?s first field hearing.

At the hearing in Birmingham, Ala., a city that?s also grappling with how to
regulate the notorious consumer loan products, Cordray outlined a dual track for
regulating payday loans.

He warned that it will be using its powers to wipe out illegal payday lending
practices?such as unauthorized debits on a person?s checking account?while it
also gathers data necessary to hash out a broader regulatory framework for the
industry as a whole.

?There are some payday lenders engaged in practices that present immediate
risk to consumers and are clearly illegal,? Cordray said from Alabama, a payday
lending hotbed. ?Where we find these practices we will take immediate steps to
eliminate them.?

The agency also released guidelines that explain that its examiners will be
evaluating all companies that offer short-term, small-dollar loans in the same
light. That means that payday-style products offered by banks and credit unions
will be scrutinized in the same way as nonbank companies that offer payday
loans.

A handful of banks, such as U.S. Bancorp (USB), Wells Fargo Co. (WFC) and
Regions Financial Corp. (RF), offer products called direct-deposit advances,
which customers can obtain instantly through online or phone requests.
Typically, customers receive a credit line up to $500. When the customer?s next
paycheck is deposited, the bank repays itself by deducting the loan balance plus
fees.

?We will be paying close attention to deposit advance products at the banks
that offer them,? said Cordray.

President Barack Obama on Jan. 4 used a controversial maneuver to appoint
Cordray as the bureau?s first director. As a result, the bureau, which had
already started supervising large banks, gained powers to inspect payday lenders
and other companies that aren?t chartered as banks but still offer consumer
loans.

Payday loans are short-term loans that cash-strapped consumers can obtain
online or at storefront locations around the country to get cash quickly for car
repairs, for instance. The small-dollar loans typically amount to several
hundred dollars. However, the features of the loans?which can come with steep
finance charges and must be repaid quickly?have made them notorious in the
consumer finance world.

Localities across the country, including Birmingham, are grappling with how to
address the industry growth. In December, the Birmingham City Council passed a
six-month moratorium on new payday, check-chasing and title loan businesses.

Payday lenders say their loans help consumers out in a pinch.

Consumer groups, however, characterize payday loans as dangerous debt traps
because of their high fees and interest rates.

The fact that the federal government?s newest financial regulator held its
first ever field hearing in on payday loans indicates that the products are
high-priority. The hearing provided the first hints at how the agency, which
opened its doors in July, plans to go about overseeing payday loans?products
that have faced only light federal regulation given that many of the lenders are
not chartered as banks, and thus, don?t fall under other banking regulators?
purview.

The bureau?s examination procedures reference six laws that apply to the
loans, including The Truth in Lending Act that governs advertising disclosures
and The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Those laws apply to payday loans
regardless of whether the products are offered through ?a third-party lead
generator, online, through a brick and mortar location, by mail, or by
telephone,? it said.

The 2010 Dodd-Frank law that established the bureau also gave it authority to
assess whether firms are engaging in practices that are unfair, deceptive or
abusive. The latter category has sparked the most concern among industry
officials because it?s new and not yet fully defined. The bureau provided
greater details Thursday, noting that practices will be dubbed ?abusive? if they
interfere with a consumer?s ability to understand product terms or take ?
unreasonable advantage? of a consumer.

Judge delays Fort Hood shooting rampage trial (AP)

FORT HOOD, Texas ? A military judge has delayed the murder trial for the Army psychiatrist charged in the Fort Hood shooting rampage until June.

Attorneys for Maj. Nidal Hasan (nih-DAHL' hah-SAHN') argued Thursday they didn't have all the evidence they needed to be ready for the March trial. Prosecutors insisted they didn't need more time, noting one defense expert was hired nearly two years ago.

The defense had asked for a July trial, but the judge settled for June.

Hasan is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder for the November 2009 attack at the Texas Army post. He faces the death penalty if convicted.

The 41-year-old Hasan remains jailed. He's paralyzed from the waist down after being shot by police the day of the rampage.

Tressel returns to college, not coaching (AP)

AKRON, Ohio ? Jim Tressel is getting a "second chance" at the school where he started coaching.

The former Ohio State coach, who resigned in disgrace last May amid a cash-for-tattoos scandal at the football powerhouse, was hired by Akron on Thursday as vice president of strategic engagement, ? a position newly created for him.

Tressel will earn a base salary of $200,000 per year, more than $3 million less than he made during the last of 10 years guiding the Buckeyes. Tressel will begin his new job on May 1.

"I feel fortunate that I got this opportunity," Tressel said following a packed news conference unlike any in the school's history. "It's going to be a fun one."

In his new position, Tressel, who said he has no interest in coaching in the NFL, will work with Akron's students, alumni and community organizations on a variety of issues. Tressel will not have any direct involvement with the school's athletic department, one of the conditions of the five-year, show-cause sanction he was given by the NCAA following an investigation.

However, Tressel's name alone is sure to give Akron, with an enrollment of 29,000, a major boost in name recognition and will certainly help in recruiting athletes and other students.

Akron president Luis M. Proenza said he had no misgiving about hiring Tressel, who was an undergraduate assistant for the Zips in 1975 and earned his master's degree in education from the school in 1977.

"Look at the man. Look at what he has done," Proenza said. "Look at the thousands of lives he has impacted. We knew that was the asset. The opportunity. And we wanted that to be available. There was no question in my mind that for the university, for the community, for Northeast Ohio, for the 30,000 students at Akron, this will make a difference."

Tressel, wearing a navy blue blazer and gold ties ? Akron's colors ? and a tie with a logo of the school's Kangaroo mascot, was typically smooth as he answered direct questions regarding his role in Ohio State's fall.

Tressel said he has no regrets, but he did acknowledge wishing he had handled some things differently.

"I think you always go back, whether it was a game you coached or a series of things that occurred and you always go back and say here's what I could have done better," he said. "In this type thing, working with young people, you can use your experience. Just like we did talking about special teams. If the right guard didn't block the guy and we had the punt blocked, we wouldn't have lost the championship.

"You always go back and you probably learn more and can teach better from some of your shortcomings."

Tressel, who was joined at the news conference by his wife, Ellen, said since leaving Ohio State that he has finished reading 30 of 100 books he pledged to read. He also joked that his wife was anxious for him to return to work.

"Ellen wanted me to get out of the house," he cracked. "I mean, how often can you cut the grass?"

Tressel served as a replay consultant last season for the Indianapolis Colts. He met with team owner Jim Irsay about the team's head coaching position but didn't get the job, and said he has no current plans to coach again. He is committed to Akron.

"I'll be coaching students every day," he said. "I'm an educator. I'm going to work as if this is the last place I'm ever going to work."
