Meet New People, Try New Things | Liberal Arts in Los Angeles

A couple weekends back I did something that I had no idea I would ever do: I attended an indoor football game. I played soccer all throughout elementary and middle school and I ran track in high school, but I have never been an avid sports watcher. I?ve been to a couple of pro and minor league games and like most Americans I?ll tune into watch the Superbowl, the Olympics and World Cup?and that?s it. My good friend Alex (and fellow Oxy student) is a fan superfan of indoor football, ?the lowest level of pro football in the United States.? He first got hooked by mistake back in high school and the rest is history. Alex was able to get some discounted tickets to see the the Ontario Warriors play their fierce rivals, the California Eagles? ?on April Fools Day. I had fun seeing what Alex was able to be so passionate about, and I can say for a fact that it was an experience I would have never had without meeting my friend.

What I love about college is that I?ve met the greatest and most eclectic group of people I?ve ever known. I have a group of friends who go out and find new Asian restaurants San Gabriel Valley every Friday night. I met a professor my first year at Oxy who got me excited about Ubuntu and helped me install it on my laptop. I met a friend who shares my love of Disneyland and who has joined me on 30+ trips to the park so far. I have a group of friends who are all filmmakers and we featured at this year?s Film Production Comps (trailer). I have a playwright friend who just hasn?t even graduated and already has had her work performed onstage with professional actors. I have a group of friends who are from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and are studying abroad at Oxy this semester.

I had no idea what I was going to do or who I was going to meet before arriving at Oxy, but I?ve been pretty pleased with the cards I?ve been dealt so far. College is a time to meet new people and try new things, so wherever you end up try and go into it with a willingness to try new things, even if they might be outside your comfort zone.

I am a junior studying to be an economics major and a history minor. Originally from Fairfield, Connecticut, I came to Oxy (and by extension Los Angeles) to see an entirely new world from what I am used to?LaLa Land has been great so far and I can?t wait to share it with you!

During the Fall 2011 semester, though I am still an Oxy student I am not physically on campus. Instead, I am studying abroad at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This is my first time spending any extended time outside the U.S. and my first time in Asia, so I?m experiencing a lot of culture at once. I may have thought that LA was quite different than ye-old Connecticut, but Hong Kong feels like another world sometimes?in a good way. I?ll be sure to post about my experience abroad from time to time, but for more frequent updates check out my website: www.davidsacci.com.

I like to consider myself a mild computer geek: I read Engadget religiously, subscribe to Wired magazine and have turned into my friends? personal tech support. With my love of computers and technology, I?ve found a place on campus where I fit right in. Last year I was part of a team of students that launched a brand new media service at Oxy: CatAList TV. CatAList is Oxy?s student-run and student produced on campus television network. Currently. I have also been a member of Oxy?s largest club, Dance Production. Each spring, the club puts on a spectacular dance performance for the entire college community to enjoy.

Last fall, I had the opportunity to be an orientation leader on our Orientation Team, O-Team for short. O-Team is a group of about forty sophomores and upperclassmen who welcome the incoming class to campus and guide them through all the fun and exciting events during orientation weekend. It was easily one of the highlight of my Oxy career so far, I met a ton of new people, met some great new friends and had a blast hanging out with my new classmates.

Thanks for reading, and I hope that over the coming weeks I can provide some helpful insight into life here at Oxy.
